The social media venue, Google Plus is Going Away, plans to be completely shut down for good on April 2nd of 2019.  I did not know this till today when I went to share a post to the social media platform.  I, then found out they were going away and that no new profiles were to be made after February 4th, which is tomorrow.  I didn't use it a lot anyway, but I visited there quite often and did not have many followers.  They attempted to create something to bring on the competition with Facebook.

Content being deleted

So, you are wondering what content will be deleted when it is dead and over.  Any Google Plus pages you have created as well as your photos and videos that are stored in your Google Plus album archive.

Important!  The deletion will not affect other Google services.  Any of your photos and videos stored in Google Photos, will not be affected.  Your Google account, and the services linked such as Gmail, YouTube and Maps, will continue to work, but the Google+ account which was only used for the social network, will be deleted forever.

Do you have a Google+ account?

If you are unsure if you have a social media account with Google Plus, they will email you the information of the closure.  You may have already received this information telling you everything you need to know about this.

You can also find out if you have an account by logging in with your Google details and still have a button on the left side that says “Join Google”, then you will definitely know you are not part of the social network.

Why do you ask is Google Plus going away?

Well, it all started with a security glitch that exposed users data between 2015-2018.  Google stated they immediately fixed the bug, but claims there is no evidence that the glitch was exploited by those who had access.  Some of the data that may be exposed are names, email addresses, occupations, birthdays, gender and photos.

On the other subject, Google Plus has never been able to pick up much steam and high competition to really compete against the social network market like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.  I believe for most bloggers and people looking and interacting this social media was not there #1 go to for social media.  The goal of creating a network to rival what Facebook was already doing just never worked and users have flocked to other services.  While the closure of the social network was identified by the security breach, it's low usage among most users helped them decide to make the call to shut it down.

Are you mourning the shutting down of Google+?

Most users are probably not that upset they are shutting down, but there may be a few of you out there that are devastated by this news.  If you are a user who mostly used Google products you may use this social media a lot more than others. I used Google Plus some, but I did not get very many followers on this social media site.

The ones I had were other bloggers for the most part.  I may have had a couple friends on there who did not blog, but that was it.  I believe that this was mainly for businesses because they could connect with other businesses.  As a blogger, I connected with other bloggers on this platform.  Otherwise, it is not really affecting me much.  I think it will make everyone's lives a little bit easier.

Here is the timeline:

  • As early as February 4th, you will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities, or events.
  • The Google+ feature for website comments will be removed by Blogger by February 4th and other sites by March 7th.  All Google+ comments on all sites will be deleted starting April 2nd.
  • Google+ sign-in buttons will stop working in the coming weeks.
  • Google+ Community owners will gain additional data starting early March 2019.
  • On April 2nd, all Google+ accounts and pages will be shut down and Google will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts.  Photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.

They plan to still continue this platform, but it will only be for business usage.  I am not sure what all the details will entail for that.  I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with that.  They are also deleting because they don't have the users/followers to support the system.  The main guy who started this up had left a few years ago and the current existing folks do not have the passion to find something else to add to it so they can keep it going.

What is going to take place for Google Plus Users?

Frankly, most Google+ users stopped using the platform a long time ago.  Personally, for me, it became evident that the community of people were no longer tuning in on this.  I started refocusing my time and effort on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.  I am starting back with Twitter this week, which will take Google Plus' place.

If you are still using Google +, your option for use are very limited.  Facebook is probably the only existing network that functions similar to Google+ and probably has a lot more features.  One thing that Google + had going for it, there didn't seem to be very many people's accounts being hacked like there is on Facebook.  I do like that on Facebook you can connect with friends, join Groups for different interest, share photos, create a video, and much more.

You can also use a private messaging system that works really well.  You can even send out business messages now I have noticed.  If there are other social media that may be good to use, please comment on this post to let me know.  I would love to know about other social media that is out there I may want to use.

What about you?  Will this closure impact you in any way?  I'd love to hear your comments and what you think about this?
